Join “Run for 10” To Help Build Schools!

Run for 10” will be staged on January 13, 2013 for the benefit of TEN Moves!, the social mobilization campaign of Bayanihang Pampaaralan that seeks to raise funds for the construction of 10,000 classrooms nationwide by encouraging individuals to donate Php10 everyday for 10 months or a lump sum of Php3,000.

I will definitely join the run, 5K! :) Can't wait to break my personal record haha. See you all there. In Metro Manila, Run for 10 will start off at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati City, with 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km race distances. Simultaneous runs will also be held in at least 10 other key areas nationwide: Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Dipolog, Dumaguete, Legazpi, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zamboanga, and Zamboanga Sibugay.

“Run for 10 is a way for us to significantly ramp up support and donations for TEN Moves!,” explains Rapa Lopa, Executive Director of the Philippine Business for Social Progress and one of the primary movers of TEN Moves! and the 57-75 Education Reform Movement. “Through this event, we hope to attract more and more Filipinos, especially the younger ones, to be part of our advocacy of helping build classrooms and a brighter future for schoolchildren.”

“Since we launched in October 2011, TEN Moves! and its mother campaign, Bayanihang Pampaaralan, have raised funding for nearly 3,000 classrooms,” explains Mario Deriquito, Senior Director of Ayala Foundation and another primary mover of TEN Moves!. “While our collective efforts to date have been commendable, we still have a long way to go in reaching our goal of 10,000 classrooms, and we are finding ways to reach our goal within two years since launching. Through Run for 10, we hope to be able to create more awareness and generate more anticipation for this cause.”

Run for 10 expects to gather 2,500 Filipinos in Metro Manila alone who will lace up their running shoes and make their move for education. The Department of Education, a key partner in the TEN Moves! advocacy, welcomes the initiative.

“TEN Moves! has shown to us just what the Filipino youth can do,” says Br. Armin Luistro FSC, Secretary of the Department of Education. “Run for 10 further harnesses their energy and desire to make the Philippines a better place to live and learn. With everyone’s participation, we are confident that we can finally resolve the classroom backlog by 2013, and provide adequate facilities for students everywhere.”

What is TEN Moves?
The Entire Nation Moves! (TEN Moves!) is a campaign to raise resources to help build 10,000 classrooms in public schools all over the Philippines. It is part of a bigger private sector-led campaign called Bayanihang Pampaaralan or ‘BP’, which was organized in response to the Department of Education’s call for support.

Its main strategy is to get 2 million people to donate P10 per day for 10 months. That will be P300 per month or P3,000 for the entire 10 months. Filipinos based overseas are also encouraged to donate US$10 per month, or $100 for the entire 10 months.

Why 10,000 classrooms?
According to the Department of Education, the total shortage is 66,800 classrooms. The department’s budget and the budget from local government units can cover about 56,000. DepEd has asked the private sector and ordinary citizens to help in building the remaining 10,000 classrooms.

How much does it cost to build a classroom?
Based on DepEd’s standard design and cost estimates, the construction of a quality classroom with floor area of 7 x 9 meters will cost an average of P600,000. The design and the cost have been reviewed by a team of private engineers and architects and both have been found to be reasonable. The cost may vary depending on the school’s geographic location, environmental conditions, and other considerations. TEN Moves’ fundraising target is based on this amount. However, the groups behind this campaign continue to look for other ways to build classrooms for lesser cost without sacrificing quality.

Will there be enough teachers and desks and other furniture for the new classrooms?
The Department of Education has provision for the needed desks and furniture. DepEd will provide for part of the needed teacher items. The rest will be handled by the local governments through the Special Education Fund.

Aside from joining Run for 10, how can people help TEN Moves?

a) By making a donation – P10 per day for 10 months will be P300 a month or P3,000 for the entire ten months. Donations of more than P3,000 will be encouraged but donations of smaller amounts will also be accepted. Overseas donors may donate an average of $10 per month or $100 for the entire 10 months.

b) By helping solicit donations from friends, relatives, and other contacts – This campaign needs the participation of everyone. So aside from donating, you can also help by spreading the word around and by convincing people within your circles of influence to also donate and help solicit among their contacts. People may also help spread the word by using their social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc.
