Science Teachers to Attend Seminar Workshop to Strengthen Science Education Under the K to 12 Program

Science mentors from public and private elementary and secondary schools are enjoined to attend the 2012 National Science Club Month (NSCM) celebration and seminar workshop to strengthen science education under the K to 12 Program.

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC said a strong foundation in the sciences in basic education can be a building block to a sound economy in the future. “If we can create an environment that nurtures young scientists, we can expect to develop generations of Filipino scientists who will draw the blueprint for a prosperous future,” he said.

Based on DepEd Memorandum No. 138, the seminar workshop will also focus on enhancing the knowledge and strategies of science mentors in the teaching of the sciences and technology using the Spiral Progression Scheme.

A stronger focus in science education is one of the goals of K to 12 which is being rolled out in phases in the public school system.

“Through the workshop, we want to introduce new trends in science and technology teaching and on how they can find application in real life situations,” Luistro explained.

The NSCM celebration and seminar workshop for science club leaders has been set at the Ecotech Center, Lahug, Cebu City from September 26 to 30, 2012.

Science club advisers, science teachers, school principals and administrators as well as science enthusiasts nationwide are invited. Some of the activities that have been lined up include workshops, group dynamics, interactive sessions, demonstration lessons on spiralling as well as exhibits. The exhibits will showcase various science, technology and environment programs as well as best practices in science research and education.

The foregoing activities are in line with the notion behind Presidential Proclamation 264 dated September 23, 2002 which declares September as the NSCM month.
