Palarong Pambansa 2011 at Dapitan City

This year’s Palarong Pambansa will be held in Dapitan City from May 8 to 14! This venue is chosen to also celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of our National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, his four years in exile and the 115th year of his death.

Palarong Pambansa is a yearly sporting event participated in by the Philippines' top elementary and high school athletes, an estimated 600 athletes and school officials per region (estimated 10, 200 participants nationwide) are expected to take part in the  week-long event. DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro emphasized that the Palaro will be run based on Filipino core values such as honesty and fair play.

Moreover, this year’s Palaro will put equal emphasis on environmental concern, thus the Secretary’s call to make it a  "green Palaro." “All participants are urged to adhere to the clean, green and eco-friendly measures that DepEd intends to implement during the conduct of the 2011 Palarong Pambansa to ensure the protection of public health and environment,” said Luistro in an interview.

To know more about this event, me with other bloggers had a meeting with Sir Tonisito M.C. Umali, the Assistant Secretary, Legal and Legislative Affairs of DepEd. "The Palarong Pambansa will start from on May 8 to May 14, 2011, the main difference of the 'palaro' this year is, it will be more greener and eco friendly. This year, the Palaro committee plans to include special awards such as the Most Green for environmental friendly athletes and the Most Disciplined Athlete and Region," said Umali.

With regards to the trash problems, Mr. Umali hopes there will be either none or limited use of plastic and styrofoam. He also urged students to bring their own utensils and plastic containers for their food, "they can use dahon ng saging as their plate to be more eco-friendly," he added.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs, headed by Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, assisted by the Task Force on School Sports (TFSS) shall spearhead the event. The TFSS shall provide technical management, secretariat/staff and operational services.

The Palarong Pambansa is DepEd’s way of promoting physical education and sports as an integral part of the Basic Education Curriculum and as an affirmation to its commitment to develop the potentials of the youth to become resposible and globally competitive citizens.

Recently, Palarong Pambansa venue coordinator Mr. Eugenio Penales reported the completion of the grandstand, the swimming pool and renovations in 10-hectare Jose Rizal Memorial State University athletic complex, the main venue of the Palaro.

Seventeen games are included in this year's Palarong Pambansa some of them are: Athetics, Arnis, Badminton , Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Chess, Football, Symnastics, Sipa takraw, Sepak Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball.

To address the safety of student athletes, no outdoor games will be held from 10AM to 2PM and authorities will strictly order all the competing regions to use the budget for medical insurance for each athlete.

Dapitan also  tightens it's security for 2011 Palarong Pambansa by installing peace and order officers for the delegates from the 17 regions that will participate. Supt. Neil B. Alinsangan, Dapitan City PNP officer-in-charge, said that more than 350 police officers, both in and out of uniform, have been scattered within the city.

He said that some personnel of ZaNorte Provincial Public Safety Company, Dipolog City police station and 25 municipal police stations in the province of ZaNorte have been assigned also to watch and guard the billeting quarters and playing venues of the event.“150 Barangay Tanods, who have recently undergone Capability-Building Training on arnis and arresting techniques at the Dapitan City Cultural and Sports Center, will also be utilized for the opening program of the upcoming  Palarong Pambansa,” said PSupt. Alinsangan.

Asec. Umali also let us do a little tour into his office, let my photos let you take on a quick tour :)

We also met Anna Cristina M. Ganzon, the Director III of DepEd.

Since DepEd Secretary Armin is out of the office when we visited, this photo of him, PNoy and Asec. Umali let us take a peek on what he looks like :) We will meet him soon in person, though.

We also talked about K+12 (pronounced as K to twelve) the new curriculum of DepEd that they are planning to implement on 2012. In a nutshell, this means that the current year spent on elementary + high school will be added with two more years. Asec. Umali said that this is inevitable since Philippines together with Djibouti and Angola are the only three remaining countries which still uses a 10-year basic education program.

More on K+12 on the coming weeks!

Some delegates said that this years palarong Pambansa held in dapitan are not good, it was a grievous fault of choosing dapitan, dipolog was better than dapitan, interms of housing, now delegates have suffered from many factors that made them tired, from too far location of events..

Our 2011 NCR Champion High School Baseball Team enjoyed staying in Dapitan. We were near the Hudyaka, and enjoyed the walks by the beach. We had our games is Dipolog, at the Katipunan field. Going the distance made our players stronger... GO NCR!! YEAH DAPITAN!!
