These days, online games are available to play using mobile phones, personal computers, and gaming consoles. A common characteristic of a good online game would be its role-playing opportunities, a wide variety of things to do, as well as positive cognitive and emotional response from players.  Knowing that the list of online games out there can be astoundingly huge, it’s hard to know where to start or what game to choose. We believe it is important to learn first what type of game best suits you, so that is why we’ve come up with a list of the types of online games you can play.

MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online)

Arguably the most popular type of online game -- MMO’s or Massive Multiplayer Online games. They usually have a large online community and can be massively addicting to play as well! Think of Minecraft, Final Fantasy, and even World of Warcraft to name a few. MMO’s are not designed to be played alone, so online interaction is quite common. The games often encourage cooperation and even stiff competition between players. It can come in different varieties too. Categories like sports, shooting, racing, and fighting-themed games technically still fall under the MMO category.

If people are playing in real-time with several hundred other players connected to the same server, then it’s an MMO. However, other subgenres stem from MMO-specific games. For example, MMO-RPG, another genre of games, is a cross between a story-based game or RPG (Role Playing Game) mixed with an online gaming community. Though sometimes it can be seen as the same genre, there is a big difference between the two. In an MMO-RPG, players assume a game identity or “avatar” in which you control their actions. You can interact with the (virtual) world, go on heroic-style action adventures in a massive fantasy-based world.  In most cases, these games also have virtual economies where you can earn money from quests, or missions, so that you can purchase any in-game items. Sounds like an epic adventure just waiting to be played!

 FPS or First Person Shooter

Ever since the game Doom popularized the deathmatch style games, soon many games have adopted the same style and platform. Games like Counter-Strike, Halo, Call of Duty became a widespread sensation and have grown ever more popular even to this day following the dawn of online games. The objective of these games involves shooting and defeating other players or teams.

For it to be called a First Person Shooter game, it must be seen from the point of view of the player you are controlling. It’s different from games that are third-person shooters – meaning you can see the character from behind, but not in their eyes. FPS games primarily involve combat using firearms which would require some strategic thinking, and team cooperation to win, making it very fun to play with groups of friends, or even strangers on the internet. Game developers these days have even come up with brand new concepts like “hero-based” First Person Shooter (FPS) games like Valorant, Overwatch, and Battlborn.

These games require a high level of skill and gaming aptitude along with teamwork and decision making which makes it a good potential for E-Sports competitions.

RTS or Real-Time Strategy

RTS or Real-Time Strategy games usually take place in a certain play area “map”, to which other players have access too as well. The core concept of the game is to gather resources, and defeat the other player in real-time. That means everyone plays within a given timeframe and the pressure forces you to make strategic decisions. Resource gathering, base building, and direct control of playable units are the core of good RTS games. Famous classic game titles include Age of Empires, Starcraft, Red Alert, and so on.
