Korean Soju in the Philippines

Korean Soju is a colorless distilled alcoholic drink usually made in Korea. Korean soju is traditionally made by distilling alcohol from fermented grains. Korean soju is considered the lighter version of vodka and a real crowd-pleaser in the Philippines.

More than a decade ago, the Korean craze or “Hallyu” wave entered the Philippines when Koreanovelas, K-Pop, and South Korean food were introduced on Philippine TV and social media. This led to the appearance of many soju-based drinks often seen in Korean series as well as samgyeopsal grills carrying soju drinks in their menu. One of the most popular soju brands in the world, and in the Philippines in particular, is Jinro. It’s considered to be the best-selling spirit.

  1. Hi. I tried the local version of Soju. Its tastes like a watered down version of Ginebra. Its produced by same company as Emperador. Must try the Korean version to compare. Price difference probably due to extra taxes on the Korean import, plus (maybe) inferior quality of the local product. Would love to know what other drinkers think.
