Award-Winning Youth Group to hold Bulacan Literature Education Workshop at SM

The Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), one of the recipients of the 9th Ten Accomplished Youth Organization (TAYO) Awards is set to conduct the 22nd leg of the Sining ng Tugma at Sukat Program (STS) on November 11, 2012 at the Event Center of SM City Baliwag.

The nationwide education outreach project is geared to advancing the skills and knowledge of its participants in the fields of literature, language, communication and patriotism through free trainings focusing on Filipino poetry, particularly the discipline and tradition of the rhyme and meter. Its main beneficiaries are teachers and students of public schools, as well as those from private institutions in the area.

Participants will have a rare opportunity to learn from multi-awarded poet and Ateneo de Manila University Professor, Dr. Michael Coroza. The eight-time Palanca awardee will be sharing his expertise during the workshop which will entail a lecture, actual writing and a one-on-one interaction with the LIRA mentors.

Also on board to help guide the participants are other LIRA “poet-volunteers” headed by their president, Phillip Kimpo Jr., and his co-director in the project, Beverly W. Siy.

Founded in 1985 by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, LIRA is one of the country’s premiere literary groups and the oldest organization of poets in Filipino. Its continuous commitment in enriching and promoting Filipino culture is highlighted by the group’s annual five-month-long poetry clinic held at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

The STS program in Baliwag is part of LIRA’s effort to bring its poetry clinic outside of Metro Manila. To this date, the STS has served 1,120 teachers and students from all over the country.
