Philippines to host 6th ASEAN Schools Games in 2014

The Philippines, through the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will host the 6th Association of South East Asian Nations Schools Games (ASG) on December 2014, even as the country is set to host the ASG golf tournament in November this year.

The Philippines participated in the recently concluded 5th ASEAN Schools Games in Hanoi, Vietnam where it sent selected 2013 Palarong Pambansa medalists. The contingent won three bronze medals in boys’ volleyball, girls’ basketball and boys’ javelin throw. Bryan Jay Pacheco bested the Palarong Pambansa record and his personal best in javelin throw. Pacheco also broke the Palarong Pambansa record in shot put.

“I am proud of our athletes and commend their discipline and dedication to their sport. Moreover, I am glad that they are able to participate in event such as this and serve as ambassadors of goodwill to our neighbors,” said Education Secretary Br Armin A. Luistro FSC, adding expressed his appreciation to PSC for actively supporting DepEd in developing the Filipino athletes.“We are looking forward to hosting the 6th ASG next year.”

The ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) is an annual sporting event which aims to enhance friendship among students around the region. It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity among the youth through school sports and provide opportunities for school athletes to engage in cultural exchange.

The 5th ASG was participated in by the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The events were track and field, sepaktakraw, swimming, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, volleyball, and pencaksilat.
